Jose & Shelby’s Surprise Proposal at the New Braunfels Tube Chute
As a San Antonio wedding photography couple, we’ve had the joy of capturing proposals in all kinds of places—from romantic Hill Country overlooks to bustling downtown spots. But when Jose reached out with his plan to propose to Shelby at the New Braunfels Tube Chute, we knew this was going to be something special.
Why? Because this wasn’t just a random scenic spot. This was their spot. Their very first date was a sweet picnic right there by the Tube Chute. And now, Jose wanted to bring their story full circle—with a surprise proposal Shelby would never forget.
Why the Tube Chute? (Spoiler: It's More Than Just a River Ride)
For those who don’t know, the New Braunfels Tube Chute is a summer hotspot where folks float down the Comal River, laughing, lounging, and enjoying Texas sunshine. It’s lively, it’s playful, and for Jose and Shelby, it’s where their story began.
Their first date was simple—just a picnic by the water, sharing snacks, stories, and plenty of laughs as people floated by. No fancy dinner. No over-the-top production. Just good vibes and genuine connection. So when it came time to pop the question, Jose knew exactly where to go.

Planning a Surprise Proposal (Without Spoiling the Surprise)
Jose wanted to keep the moment intimate, but he also wanted family and friends to be there when Shelby said "yes." The challenge? Pulling off a surprise with a small crowd of loved ones… at a public spot… on a sunny Texas day.
That’s where strategy (and a little creativity) comes in.
Jose worked with family to get there early and set up a spot for the picnic. Once the picnic spot was set family and friends hid around a corner and waited for the moment. Everyone had a role to play—and we, as photographers, had to blend in too.
Our Role: The “Nature Photographers” in Disguise
Let’s be honest, carrying big cameras at a place like the Tube Chute isn’t exactly subtle. So we leaned into it.
We set up as if we were just nature photographers, capturing shots of the river, the trees, and the “general ambiance.” We even snapped a few scenic shots to sell the story. (Pro tip: when you’re shooting proposals in public spaces, blending in is part of the job description!)
We’ve done this before—whether it’s pretending to be tourists in downtown San Antonio or “just taking sunset photos” at Canyon Lake. Staying incognito is half the fun, and it keeps the moment authentic.
The Big Moment: A Picnic, a Ring, and a Perfect “Yes”
When the moment came, Jose recreated the vibe of their first date. A simple picnic setup by the water, with their favorite snacks and a cozy blanket. Shelby thought it was just a sweet throwback to their beginnings. But Jose had a little more planned.
With family and friends strategically nearby (and us ready with cameras in hand), Jose got down on one knee.
The look on Shelby’s face? Pure surprise, followed by happy tears. It was a beautiful mix of shock, joy, and that moment of realization:
“Oh wow, this is really happening.”
The best part? As soon as she said “yes,” their family and friends emerged from their hiding spots, cheering and clapping. There were hugs, high-fives, and even a few happy strangers who joined in the applause. You can't script reactions like that.
