Our Most Important Wedding Ever

There is something quietly humbling about standing in the middle of a wedding day without a camera in your hands.

For years, we have lived inside other people’s moments. We have watched hands shake just before vows, seen parents hold back tears they did not expect, and felt the energy of a dance floor that refuses to end. As photographers, we are always aware of the fleeting nature of it all. We anticipate it, frame it, and preserve it.

But this time, there was no anticipation. No timeline to follow. No expectation beyond being present.

This time, it was ours.

After photographing more than two hundred weddings, we found ourselves in a place that felt almost surreal to say out loud. We were getting married. Not in a ballroom or a chapel or even a familiar venue, but in the wide, quiet expanse of Big Bend National Park, where the horizon stretches endlessly and time seems to soften around the edges.

We did not want a production. We wanted a moment.

Choosing Something That Felt Like Us

Big Bend has a way of simplifying everything. It strips away distraction and replaces it with space. The kind of space that invites you to breathe a little deeper and slow down without even realizing it.

We have always been drawn to places that feel untouched, places where the landscape does not compete for attention but instead gently holds the moment. Big Bend does that effortlessly. It does not ask for anything from you. It simply exists, vast and quiet and steady.

This trip began as something simple. A birthday escape. A chance to step away for a few days and explore. But somewhere between the planning and the packing, it became clear that this place deserved more than a visit. It deserved a memory that would last far beyond the drive home.

It felt right to begin our marriage here, in a place that mirrors everything we value in our work. Honest connection. Unscripted moments. The kind of beauty that does not need to be arranged.

Terlingua and the Rhythm of the Desert

We stayed at Far Flung Adventure Center, tucked into the quiet charm of Terlingua, where everything feels just a little slower and a little more intentional. There is a certain character to this place that you cannot replicate. It is rugged and artistic and completely unpolished in the best way.

Mornings felt unhurried. Evenings stretched long after the sun disappeared. The desert has its own rhythm, and it gently pulls you into it.

We spent our days exploring in a way that felt less like sightseeing and more like simply being. One of our favorite hikes was the Lost Mine Trail, where each turn revealed another view that made us pause a little longer than expected. There is something about climbing above the desert floor and looking out across layers of mountains that makes everything else feel small in the best possible way.

Another day, we found ourselves on the Rio Grande with Far Flung Outdoor Center, paddling through canyons that felt carved out of time itself. The water moved quietly beneath us as the cliffs rose on either side, and it was one of those moments where you do not say much because there is nothing to add.

Somewhere along the way, what started as a birthday trip became something more meaningful. It became the beginning of everything.

The Morning That Felt Like Ours

The morning of our wedding did not feel like a production. It felt like us.

We started the day at Venga Cafe, sharing breakfast in a quiet corner as the desert slowly woke up around us. There was no rush, no pressure, just the simple awareness that something meaningful was waiting for us later that day.

Back at our place, we spent time getting ready separately, but not entirely apart. We photographed each other in those in between moments, capturing the anticipation in a way that felt deeply personal. It was a rare experience for us, stepping into both roles at once, documenting and being documented, seeing each other not just as partners but as subjects in a story we were finally living ourselves.

There was a calmness to it all that we had never experienced before on a wedding day. No timeline to chase. No expectations to meet. Just a quiet unfolding.

Trusting Someone Else to Tell Our Story

As photographers, handing over control is not always easy. We are used to anticipating moments before they happen, adjusting for light, guiding when needed and stepping back when it matters most.

This time, we trusted Shelby Loveland to do what we have done for so many others. And she did it beautifully.

We met her and began the day with a drive to Santa Elena Canyon, where the cliffs rise dramatically along the Rio Grande and create a sense of scale that is almost impossible to describe. Standing there together, with the river carving its way through stone, it felt like the perfect place to begin documenting the day.

On the way back, we stopped near the volcanic tuff formations, where the textures, color, and contrast of the landscape added a completely different feel to the images. It was not about posing or perfection. It was about movement, connection, and letting the environment shape the moment.

Shelby saw it all with an intentional eye and a calm presence that allowed us to simply exist in the day. It reminded us how important trust is in this process, how much it matters to feel seen without having to think about it.

Where It All Became Real

By the time we arrived at Sotol Vista Overlook, the light had started to soften in that unmistakable way only the desert can create.

The overlook opened up in front of us, layer after layer of desert and distant mountains stretching out into the horizon. It felt expansive and intimate all at once, as if the entire landscape had paused for just a moment.

Mark Chiles, our officiant, met us there, bringing a sense of calm and grounding that anchored the moment in something deeper. There was no rush, no script that needed to be followed perfectly. Just a quiet understanding of what this moment meant.

As we began our vows, something unexpected happened. A small group of strangers had gathered nearby to watch the sunset, and without realizing it, they became part of our ceremony. There were about thirty of them quietly witnessing something deeply personal without ever intruding on it.

It could have felt overwhelming, but instead it felt strangely beautiful. A reminder that even the most intimate moments can exist within something larger.

We read our vows, exchanged rings, and stood there together as the light shifted around us. The sky deepened in color, the air cooled, and for a brief moment, everything felt perfectly still.

Celebrating in Our Own Way

After it was all said and done, we made our way to La Kiva, a place that feels as unique as the landscape surrounding it.

It was the perfect ending to the day. Relaxed, a little eclectic, and completely unpretentious. We sat together, letting the reality of it all settle in, replaying moments in our minds that already felt like memories.

There was no grand exit, no timeline to follow into the night. Just the quiet understanding that everything we needed had already happened.

What This Changed for Us

Getting married in Big Bend did not just give us a beautiful story. It shifted something deeper.

It reminded us what it feels like to be on the other side of the lens. To feel the anticipation, the vulnerability, the joy that comes from simply being present with the person you love.

It reinforced everything we have always believed about weddings. That the most meaningful moments are not staged. That connection matters more than perfection. That when you strip everything back, what remains is what truly matters.

As photographers, we will carry this with us into every wedding we document moving forward. Not as an idea, but as something we have lived ourselves.

A Beginning That Feels Like Home

Big Bend gave us more than a place to get married. It gave us a beginning that feels grounded, intentional, and entirely our own.

It reminded us that weddings do not need to be defined by tradition or expectation. They can be shaped by who you are and what matters most to you.

And sometimes, the most important wedding you will ever experience is the one where you finally get to stand still and feel it all.
