Big Bend is not a place you stumble into. You choose it deliberately, you drive toward it for hours through some of the most open land in Texas, and somewhere along the way the desert starts to do something to you. The Chihuahuan Desert has a way of making everything feel quieter and slower, and by the time the Chisos Mountains rise up from the flat and the road curves into the basin, you are already different than you were when you left.
