Inside "Shifting Terrain": An Evening at Contra/Common in Bee Cave
We spent a Saturday evening in July at Contra/Common in Bee Cave, documenting the opening reception for "Shifting Terrain," a two-person exhibition from San Antonio painter Kristina Salinas and her mentor, Thomas Crowther. Kristina and her husband, Simon, asked us to cover the night, and we said yes without hesitation.
The gallery filled up fast. Friends and family arrived early, a local journalist worked the room with a notebook, and neighbors from Bee Cave and Austin wandered in throughout the evening. A DJ spun vintage vinyl in the corner, a charcuterie board disappeared within the first hour, and conversation moved from painting to painting as people found their way through the show.
"Shifting Terrain" pairs Salinas and Crowther around a shared thread: both artists have spent recent years working through questions of identity, memory, and what it means to rebuild after loss. Salinas paints in saturated color and exaggerated form, drawing on her San Antonio and South Texas roots. Crowther, who splits his influences between his native England and his adopted home of Augusta, Georgia, works in oil, print, and mixed media to explore similar ground from a different angle. Seeing the two bodies of work side by side gave the room a kind of conversation of its own, one that carried into the crowd standing in front of it.
Coverage like this is a bit of a departure from the weddings and proposals we usually document, but the approach doesn't change. We work the way we always do: staying out of the way, watching for the moment someone laughs at something across the room, catching the DJ cueing up the next record, noticing who lingers longest in front of which piece. It's the same instinct that shapes how we cover a first look or a reception toast, just pointed at a gallery instead of a garden.
There's a personal thread running through this one too. Royce crossed paths with Simon years before, long before weddings became the full-time focus, so photographing this show felt a little like a full circle moment.
