A Sunset Proposal at Hotel Emma at The Pearl: Carl and Emily's Story
Carl and Emily had come to San Antonio for some time away together. Carl had a plan for the trip that Emily did not know about, and it started a few steps from their hotel.
A Ring That Arrived Days Before
The detail that shaped the whole evening was the ring. Carl had commissioned a custom engagement ring from Evermark Studio, and it arrived only days before the trip. That kind of timing leaves no room to spare. A ring made for one person, in the hands of the person who planned the moment, with the proposal already on the calendar.
Choosing the Spot
Carl and Emily were staying at Hotel Emma, so we looked for a place close enough that the walk would not give anything away. We settled on the amphitheater at The Pearl, which sits between Hotel Emma and the Riverwalk. It is open, quiet in the evening, and easy to reach, with the hotel on one side and the river path on the other.
Planning Around the Rain
The forecast was unpredictable, with rain possible through the evening. Instead of hoping for the best, we planned for both outcomes. Behind Hotel Emma there is a covered area, and we agreed that if the weather turned, the proposal would move there. A backup plan for a moment that cannot be repeated is worth the few minutes it takes to make.
The Proposal
As the evening moved toward sunset, the rain held off. Carl brought Emily to the amphitheater, and the proposal went ahead as planned, with the open space around them and the hotel just behind. We kept our distance and let the moment belong to the two of them.
When the Rain Arrived
We started out for the next set of photos right after the yes, and that was when the rain began to fall. The covered spot behind Hotel Emma, which we had planned as a fallback for the proposal, became the location for Carl and Emily's couple photos instead. Out of the rain, we spent time on candid moments between them while the weather settled.
When the rain let up, we went up to their room. Elevator photos, photos on the balcony, and a few more frames as they headed out for the dinner they had planned. The evening that could have been cut short by weather ended up with more variety because of it.
Planning a Proposal Around Weather
A rain plan does not need to be elaborate. Pick a covered or sheltered spot close to your main location, walk it ahead of time, and decide in advance what will trigger the switch. In Carl and Emily's case, we never needed it for the proposal, and we still got good use out of it afterward.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should you do if it might rain on proposal day? Choose a covered backup location near your primary spot and settle on it beforehand with your photographer. That way a change in weather becomes a quick move rather than a scramble.
Can you have a custom engagement ring made for a proposal? Yes. Studios that make custom rings, like Evermark Studio, work to order, so it helps to start well ahead of the date you plan to propose and to confirm delivery before you travel.
