A South Padre Island Micro Wedding at Sea Turtle, Inc. | Clarice & Nathan

Some weddings take us to places that mean more than a beautiful backdrop. Clarice and Nathan's micro wedding on South Padre Island brought us back to a place with personal history, surrounded by the people who matter most to them.

Clarice and Nathan chose a small celebration at Sea Turtle, Inc., with close friends and family, a ceremony led by Clarice's sister, and a reception at Padre Island Brewing Company. They made the day their own, and that was what mattered most.

Returning to South Padre Island

We arrived on South Padre Island the day before the wedding and stayed for several days. We enjoy traveling for weddings because spending time in a place gives us a better feel for its surroundings and the experience our couples are creating.

Sea Turtle, Inc. was already familiar to me from my earlier photography work with my daughter Liesl. Seeing the organization's growth was remarkable. The new hospital, which opened in March 2025, spans more than 15,000 square feet and supports the organization's work in sea turtle rescue, rehabilitation, research, and education.

It's a place with a purpose beyond its setting. That made it a fitting location for a couple planning a wedding centered on personal meaning rather than a long list of traditions.

Getting Ready at the Courtyard by Marriott

The afternoon of the wedding, we met Clarice and Nathan at the Courtyard by Marriott South Padre Island, directly across the street from Sea Turtle, Inc.

They spent this part of the day with close friends and family. We photographed the preparations and the interactions happening around them, allowing the day to unfold without turning every moment into a posed photograph.

The weather was uncertain. Rain had passed through earlier that morning, and the forecast still threatened more showers. For the time being, though, things remained manageable.

With the ceremony venue just across the street, everyone could make their way over when it was time. There was no complicated transportation plan or long drive between locations. The day could move naturally from getting ready to the ceremony.

A First Look Before Walking Into the Ceremony Together

Clarice and Nathan planned a first look before entering their ceremony together. Nathan took his place and waited for Clarice to arrive.

We could see the nerves as the moment approached. Then they saw each other, embraced, and something changed. The tension gave way to smiles and a visible sense of relief. Their spirits lifted as they took in the moment together.

Those are the moments we look for as documentary wedding photographers. There was nothing for us to manufacture or direct. We simply needed to be present and ready when their reactions unfolded.

For us, a first look is not about creating a particular photograph. It is about giving a couple a chance to see each other, share a few moments, and experience the emotion of the day in their own way.

Clarice and Nathan's first look did exactly that.

An Intimate Ceremony at Sea Turtle, Inc.

The ceremony took place at the Laguna Madre Bay Amphitheater at Sea Turtle, Inc., a distinctive South Padre Island wedding venue overlooking the bay.

The setting brought together the coastal landscape and the organization's conservation mission. Sea Turtle, Inc. works to protect sea turtles through medical care, conservation, research, and education. Its event spaces offer couples a way to celebrate in a location that has a meaningful purpose beyond the wedding itself.

Clarice and Nathan gathered with their small group of family and friends. Rather than following a ceremony designed around a large production, they had a service that reflected their relationships and priorities.

One of the most meaningful details was having Clarice's sister officiate the ceremony. When someone close to a couple leads their wedding, the words and moments can carry a personal connection that is difficult to replicate.

The ceremony included their vows and a handfasting ritual, adding another layer of meaning to the promises they were making. With their loved ones gathered around them, Clarice and Nathan committed to their future together.

Then came their first kiss as a married couple.

As the ceremony was finishing, the rain began.

When the Rain Arrived

The weather had been a question throughout the afternoon, and now we had our answer. Rain started falling just as Clarice and Nathan's ceremony came to an end.

Fortunately, the location they had chosen at the Laguna Madre Bay Amphitheater allowed the ceremony to finish, and we were able to move indoors for the next part of the day.

Weather is one of the realities of getting married on the Texas coast. Even with a forecast and a plan, conditions can change quickly. A good wedding day is not necessarily one where everything goes according to schedule. Sometimes it is one where everyone adapts and keeps moving.

Once inside, we continued photographing Clarice and Nathan with their family and friends. We also made time for photographs with the sea turtle residents and Mama, the resident cat.

Those portraits gave the day a character all its own. The setting was not interchangeable with a hotel ballroom or a traditional wedding venue. Sea Turtle, Inc. was part of the couple's experience, and it became part of the story we documented.

Dinner and Celebration at Padre Island Brewing Company

After the ceremony and photographs, everyone headed to Padre Island Brewing Company for the reception.

Known on the island for its handcrafted beer and casual food, Padre Island Brewing Company was a fitting place to continue the celebration. The atmosphere shifted from the emotion of the ceremony to a relaxed evening of food, drinks, conversation, and laughter.

Friends and family shared stories and enjoyed dinner together. With a smaller guest list, everyone had the opportunity to spend time with one another rather than feeling pulled in several directions.

That is one of the things we appreciate about micro weddings. A smaller celebration does not mean the day matters any less. It can mean more opportunities to connect with the people who have played a part in a couple's lives.

Clarice and Nathan had chosen a wedding that felt like them, from the ceremony led by Clarice's sister to the unusual setting and the gathering afterward. The reception gave everyone time to enjoy being together and celebrate the beginning of their marriage.

Wedding Photography That Travels With You

For us, Clarice and Nathan's wedding was a reminder of why we enjoy photographing celebrations outside our home base of San Antonio.

Traveling for a wedding is about more than arriving with our cameras. It gives us the chance to experience a place alongside our couples and document the details that make their celebration different from anyone else's.

South Padre Island has its own character, from the coastal setting and Laguna Madre Bay to the people and organizations that make the island distinctive. Photographing a wedding at Sea Turtle, Inc. brought together that sense of place and a personal connection from years earlier.

At WalstonPhoto, both of us, Royce and Michelle, photograph weddings together. Our approach is documentary and photojournalistic, with an emphasis on real interactions, genuine emotion, and the relationships surrounding the couple. We offer guidance when it is helpful, but we do not want a wedding day to feel like a series of staged photographs.

Whether we are photographing a wedding in San Antonio, throughout the Texas Hill Country, along the Gulf Coast, or farther from home, our goal remains the same: to document the day as it actually felt.

Clarice and Nathan's South Padre Island micro wedding had uncertainty in the forecast, a deeply personal ceremony, sea turtles, a resident cat, and an evening filled with good food and stories. Most importantly, it brought together two people and the family and friends who matter to them.

It was a wonderful weekend of love, shared with a close circle of people, in a place that made the celebration unmistakably their own. Those are the memories worth keeping.
