Jake Bush at Gruene Hall: A Night Out With Friends We Met Through Weddings

Some nights out belong on the blog even without a wedding attached. On a Thursday night in October, we made the drive to Gruene to see Jake Bush play Gruene Hall for the first time, and the room around us was full of people we first met through weddings.

A First for Jake at Gruene Hall

Jake and Brittany were married in April 2023, and we photographed their Hill Country wedding at Bergheim Ranch. Jake's music was part of that day, and it has followed us since. We saw him play at 11th Street Cowboy Bar in Bandera, and now we were watching him take the stage at one of the best known rooms in Texas music.

Gruene Hall was built in 1878 in the historic town of Gruene, now part of New Braunfels, and it bills itself as the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas. The layout has changed very little over the decades, with a tin roof overhead, open sides for the breeze, and a small stage at the back. Many well-known artists have played there over the years, and for a Texas musician, a first night on that stage is a milestone. Jake's was this month.

A Room Full of Familiar Faces

Jake had a large group in the crowd from the Houston area. Brittany was there, along with their friend John, Jake's parents, and Darrel, who officiated Jake and Brittany's wedding.

Darrel also officiated the wedding of Kalyn and Gary, whom we photographed in August 2025 at Storm Schack in Matagorda. Kalyn and Gary came out to hear Jake play, so one corner of the room held two couples we had photographed, joined by the same officiant at two separate weddings.

On our side, Michelle's family filled in around us. Her son Cameron came, along with her siblings Scott, Chris, and Kelly, her niece Josie, and Scott's wife Cindy. It was an easy group to be part of, with the same mix of conversation, music, and a little dancing that a hall like Gruene is built for.

Friends Made by Way of a Golf Ball

We also met two new fans that night, John and Tracy. The introduction came by way of some errant golf shots by the drummer Christian that landed in John and Tracy’s backyard some time back. Not every friendship needs a better origin story than that, and by the end of the night it was clear this one did not.

What Weddings Leave Behind

We photograph a wedding day as it unfolds, from the first quiet moments to the last song. What we do not always know when we start is how many of those days turn into relationships that continue. The couples we photographed at Bergheim Ranch and on the Texas coast now sit in the same room, listening to the same music, years after the weddings themselves.

That is part of why we approach weddings the way we do, in a documentary style that keeps the focus on the people and the moments between them. The photographs are what couples keep, and the friendships are what stay with us.

If you are planning a wedding in the Texas Hill Country, on the coast, or somewhere farther away, we would be glad to talk through it. You can reach us through our contact page, or see more of our work on our wedding photography page.
