A Proposal at La Mariposa Behind The Monarch San Antonio
Justin and Michaela do not get away together very often. That was the first thing that gave it away.
Justin had planned a weekend in San Antonio, and he had planned the proposal for the evening they arrived. They checked in at The Monarch San Antonio on a Friday. Michaela knew something was up. A weekend away is rare for them, and she had a feeling this one had a reason behind it. What she did not know was when, or where.
Why La Mariposa
La Mariposa is the open-air pavilion between The Monarch and Hemisfair Park. The hotel describes it as inspired by the migration of the monarch butterfly, with three wings overhead and a soft glow by evening. For a proposal it offers a defined place to stand, open on the sides, with the hotel rising behind it.
It also kept the evening simple. Their room, the pavilion, and dinner were all within a few minutes of each other. Justin could bring Michaela down for dinner without taking her anywhere that gave the plan away.
The plan, and the plan behind the plan
We did not coordinate with the hotel. La Mariposa is a gathering space, and there was a chance an event would be using it that evening. So we went in with two options. If the pavilion was open, the proposal would happen there. If it was not, we had a second spot ready nearby. As it turned out, the pavilion was open.
That is how we approach most surprise proposals in public spaces. We scout early, we arrive before the couple does, and we keep an alternative in our back pocket so the moment does not depend on a calendar we cannot see.
Sunset
They came down right at sunset. The light was dropping behind the building and the pavilion was beginning to take on its evening glow. Justin brought Michaela toward La Mariposa with The Monarch behind them, and he stopped and turned to her.
Getting down on one knee he asked one of the most important questions in their relationship.
She said yes.
After
Once the first few minutes had passed, we spent time with them. We made portraits of the two of them around the pavilion, photographed the rings up close, and stayed back for candids while they took in what had just happened. Those are often the photographs couples return to, the ones made after the question is answered, when the two of them are simply talking.
Then they went to dinner, which is what the evening was supposedly for.
Planning a hotel proposal in downtown San Antonio
A few things we have learned from proposals that begin and end at the same hotel:
Staying on property keeps the logistics small. Nobody needs to be driven anywhere, and the surprise holds longer.
Public spaces at hotels can host events without much notice. Have a second location chosen before the day, and share it with your photographer.
Sunset moves quickly downtown, and buildings change when the light reaches you. We will help you choose the timing.
A believable reason to leave the room matters. Dinner works because it is expected.
If you are considering a proposal downtown, we have photographed others nearby, including The Grotto at Hemisfair, Hotel Emma at The Pearl, and Riverwalk behind The Westin. We also photograph proposals at the Japanese Tea Garden and across the Texas Hill Country.
You can read more about how we work on our San Antonio proposal photography page. We are glad to talk through timing and locations whenever you are ready.
Congratulations, Justin and Michaela.
