Engagement Photos at the San Antonio Botanical Garden

We've spent a lot of time at the San Antonio Botanical Garden over the years, mostly for weddings, but the same qualities that make it work for a ceremony make it one of our favorite spots for engagement and bridal sessions too. It's rare to find one location with this much range in a single afternoon: palm and cycad groves, open lawns, formal gardens, and quiet wooded paths, all within a short walk of each other.

We photographed Alysha and Jorge here a few years back, and the garden's variety gave the session a natural rhythm. We moved from the structured formal gardens into looser, greener paths as the light shifted, letting the setting change without ever leaving the property. It's one of the easiest places to build a session with real visual range without driving between multiple locations.

Mara's Bridal Portraits

We also shot Mara's bridal portraits here, which called for a different approach than an engagement session. The garden's architecture and structured plantings gave the portraits a timeless, formal quality, while still keeping things soft and natural rather than stiff.

Why It Works

A few reasons the Botanical Garden keeps coming up as a location we recommend:

Variety in one place. Formal gardens, native Texas landscapes, a conservatory, and open lawn space all exist within the same grounds, which means a session doesn't need to feel like one repeated backdrop.

Consistent light. The mix of open lawns and shaded groves gives flexibility across different times of day, which matters for sessions that can't always be scheduled around golden hour.

A setting that photographs differently for different couples. Some couples want soft and romantic, others want something more architectural and structured. The garden accommodates both without changing location.
